How Our Asian Restaurant in Raleigh, NC
Got Its Start

Five Star Restaurant was created in homage to our Chinese roots — the idea was to create fresh and modern Chinese cuisine that would cater to the diverse demographics of the Triangle area.

Taking some of our favorite foods from growing up with a Chinese mother and visits to our grandparents in Taiwan, then adding unique twists, we developed our first menu in October 2000. With the help of local artists, we were able to transform our warehouse space into a comfortable, uniquely urban atmosphere in a sea of industrial buildings.

The restaurant was named after our grandfather, General FM Hsu (he was the equivalent of a Five Star General in the US Army, hence the name), who proudly served in the Republic of China (Taiwan) armed forces until retirement. This inspired the military theme of our logos.

As one of the first establishments to feature local DJs on a weekly basis, the Five Star bar has remained a favorite of locals over the years. We have also been fortunate enough to host many world-renowned DJs and entertainers over the years — you never know who you might see spinning at Five Star Restaurant.
